King’s College London celebrated a monumental occasion last September as its Students’ Union marked its 150th anniversary, proudly holding the title of the United Kingdom’s oldest students’ union. Established in December 1873, the Union’s inception aimed to cultivate a sense of belonging and camaraderie among students. From its modest beginnings, where students were granted a common room, emerged the inaugural organisation known as ‘The Union Society of King’s College London.’
Reflecting on this illustrious journey, it’s awe-inspiring to witness the remarkable evolution of KCLSU.
Today, KCLSU serves as a bustling epicentre for over 30,000 student members, united in advocating for various social causes. With a repertoire of 300 societies and student activity groups, the Union actively tackles inequality, oppression, and discrimination, nurturing a culture of collaboration and solidarity. This vibrant community is bolstered by five social venues spread across London, offering essential resources such as student wellbeing support, confidential advice spaces, a state-of-the-art radio and podcast studio, meeting rooms, bars, cafes, and event spaces for student-led activities like dance and yoga classes.
Syed Hassan, KCLSU’s VP for Welfare and Communities, fittingly observes, “We were the first student union in the country, and it reflects how far we’ve come.”
